Lemon the Duck Overview
(ages 3 – 7) This gorgeous picture book is based on the inspirational true story of Lemon the Pekin Duck, who was born in an elementary school classroom. Neurological issues make Lemon unable to walk, but with the support of a compassionate teacher and her students, Lemon is still able to become one happy duck. In the story, Ms. Lake and her class conduct an egg-hatching project in school and on the big day, welcome four little ducklings into the world. The students soon realize that the soft yellow one they named Lemon looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, but cannot stand up and walk like a duck. They worry that Lemon won’t be happy if she is not able to do all the things ducks love to do, and work together to help Lemon thrive. When the time comes to tackle the challenge of encouraging Lemon to stand up, their creative ideas lead to a surprising solution, the recycling of an old doggie life vest, which, it turns out, makes the perfect duck harness. Through working with Lemon, the students share her in victories and learn that acceptance, love, and extra special care can go a long way. Although this book appears to be about a duck, what I took away from it is what I hope children will as well: compassion for others. This particular duck doesn’t appear to act like a “typical” duck – walks differently, seems to be generally slower, and doesn’t do all the things typical ducks do. So the children are worried at first, then with adult encouragement, help the duck to be the best it can be. If all adults taught our children this way, our world would be a more gentle place for those with special needs. A great book, for families and schools.

This book by Nona K. Bauer captures the essence of what differentiates the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever from all other retrieving breeds; the “Toller,” as it is affectionately known to breed fans, is not merely a smaller version of a Golden Retriever, but a breed in its own right.
For a Toller enthusiast, this book goes beyond all of the essentials of Toller history, conformation, and ownership by pointing out activities and clubs in which Tollers excel (which, it must be pointed out, is practically everything!). These versatile, energetic, social, and fun-loving dogs are champion hunters (their fluffy, brushy tails with their characteristic prance lured, or “tolled” in ducks, making them excellent hunting and retrieving dogs), agility dogs, tracking dogs, therapy dogs–in fact, Tollers are so intelligent that with positive and loving leadership, they succeed in every activity in which they are placed.
